The 35-year-old forward started 2018-19 strong, scoring five goals and nine assists in 25 games after returning to the NHL this season. But, his role has diminished in recent weeks as he hasn’t scored in his past 11 games. He is the team’s third-leading scorer.
Kovalchuk, who previously spent five years with SKA St. Petersburg in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, signed a three-year, $18.75 million contract with the Kings before the start of the season.
The Kings begin a four-game homestand Sunday as they face the Hurricanes at 7:30 pm ET.
